Country evidence and practical tools for e-waste management in 11 Caribbean countries

An e-waste number is most useful when a country can understand how it was calculated and update it. That principle shaped SCYCLE’s work with 11 Caribbean countries under the GEF ISLANDS Programme.

The national assessments use data on electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market, product lifetimes and other available information, such as customs data on imports and exports, to estimate e-waste generated. They examine collection and treatment arrangements, economic factors, data gaps and legislation. The results are specific to each country: different market sizes, data availability and infrastructure call for different national responses.

SCYCLE also trained national partners in the tools and methods used in the work. Participants explored how to calculate and revisit equipment put on the market and e-waste generated, assess economic impacts and component prices, and connect the results to questions of regulation and implementation. The aim is to make the assessments usable as a living evidence base rather than a one-off publication.

The reports were prepared by UNITAR SCYCLE with support from the Suriname Waste Management Foundation (SUWAMA), under the guidance of BCRC-Caribbean as regional executing partner under the GEF-funded ISLANDS Programme, implemented by UNEP.Explore the 11 assessments: ewastemonitor.info
